taylor's graduate capabilities
Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) was created to enhance university-level education to meet the ever- changing demands of industry, community and globalisation. TGC outlines the core knowledge, skills, abilities and qualities that students will develop at Taylor’s University regardless of their programme of study.
The 8 Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities
Discipline Specific Knowledge
I have learnt to discipline myself in my course of studying Law in Taylor's University. Having previously completed four years of studies overseas has laid a good foundation for me to embark on this journey. Reading law is not an easy task, but I am determined to do well and obtain specific knowledge in the field that I wish to specify in- Corporate Law. To work towards my aim, I discipline myself to work hard and smart to specialise in the field.
Lifelong Learning
In the fast-changing era that we are living in today, it is important to remain competitive and keep ourselves equipped with knowledge to embark on our career lives in the future. Lifelong learning is a capability that was emphasized in Taylor's because it is indeed going to be useful for us. It taught me that the only way to keep yourself on demand in the professional sector and also for my own knowledge and intellectual gains, is to be humble to learn throughout my life.
Thinking and Problem Solving
In my future career life, nothing is going to be textbook based. When dealing with real life problems, we can never refer or even rely on textbook knowledge. I believe that everything that I am learning right now only lays a solid foundation and trains for critical thinking for future usage. In reality, thinking on the feet and solving problems quickly is essential and it is especially so when they aren't any guidance provided. Such a capability is emphasized during Question & Answer session in class presentations. Our lecturers also asks questions which require critical thinking and it really helps develop this aspect of the TGC.
Communication Skill
Communication skills is extremely crucial in every aspect of life. Effective communication between people is what keeps the world running. No man can take on the world on his own and we need teamwork and corporation to get things done. Communication is the best lubricant to human interaction. This capability is honed into students because communication is highly emphasized amongst students during group discussions, and fruitful interaction is also integrated into our daily study routines. I am also taught to communicate appropriately in different social settings as this will be very useful in the future.
Interpersonal Skills
Many times, group dynamic is compromised when a team of people is working together, but lack good interpersonal skills. Essentilly, this is about how well we understand the strength and weaknesses of every member in a team, and fully utilize it to ensure utmost efficiency in getting work done. It is also interconnected with communication skills because they work hand in hand. Many group projects were put in place for us to hone our skills in ensuring good dynamism between individuals. It truly helped develop this aspect and I believe will do us good in the future.
Intrapersonal Skills
"To be able to handle oneself, is the key to handle the world." It is important that we can manage ourselves well because this is the basic to everything we embark on in the future. To be discipline, to handle emotions well, to motivate myself and to be self reliant is indeed an important skill to learn. The school allows us to manage our time by ourselves by letting us choose slots of many activities and this helps us to acquire the skills of self managing. They do not spoon feed us with information and answers as well. Most of the time, we are directed to research and find out for ourselves. This is extremely important to ensure that we are self reliant.
Citizenship and Global Perspective
Our globalized world is so integrated today that no country can be independent on its own. Even the world powerhouse the United States rely on many smaller but rising countries to keep their economy in place. It is thus very vital for us to develop a broad global persepective so as to ensure we remain competitive in the future. I was given the opportunity to develop such capabilities because Taylor's does not separate international students from local students. We not only get to interact with students from all over Malaysia, but also from all over the world. In the Law school itself, our semester already consists of many international students like those from Maldives, Kenya and Seychelles. This is a great opportunity for us to develop a global citizen outlook.
Digital Literacy
In the digital age today, we can barely get quality workdone without the use of technology. It is henceforth important to equip ourselves with good literacy in terms of digital knowledge. Using smartphones, tablets and laptops make storing and preparation of information so much easier. Other than that, the online internet platform is extremely vast and it helps ease the process of information obtaining so fast. Today, we no longer find it difficult to deal with the reading of dual jurisdiction because it is relatively easy to obtain information on English Law. The school help develop our digital literacy by having certain specified days in the semester for which we will need to attempt online work. The E-Learning week and the usage of online portal for information transmission also helps.
